God of river erne - knowledge
These God of the River Erne cufflinks are made in the lost wax cast method with oxidized sterling silver.
Above the Custom house on the River Erne is this sculpture, a personification of the Irish River. This particular God was sculpted by Edward Smythe around 1780.
Ireland is a land rich in mythology, with tales of mystical Gods, powerful warriors and the beautiful enchanting folk of the Sidhe, or Fairy. The drowning of a goddess in a river is common in Irish mythology and typically represents the dissolving of her divine power into the water, which then gives life to the land.
Through water lay the way to the Otherworld, one who bathes in the Irish rivers, or drinks their water, would bestow wisdom and knowledge, or healing (unlike drinking the whiskey).
